A Game of Mafia

A Game of Mafia is a murdergame in The Murderverse. It was run by Timeline Master Awe (awe921).

As the first murdergame created, it initially started off bare bones, with only Innocent, an Investigator and 2 killers. The second round introduced a slew of roles, but otherwise is fairly standard. Despite its lack of gimmicks and ending only after 2 rounds, its influence is undeniable, inspiring many other forum games and becoming the catalyst of the Murderverse itself.

It was followed by A Game of Mafia 2.

Pregame

The game opens with a conversation between the listener and a figure obscured in darkness. The figure, who later reveals himself to be Timeline Master Awe, informs the listener that he has abducted them and several others into his personal mansion— where in order to survive, they must play a game of murder.

Consisting of 14 participants, the objective of the murdergame is for the 12 assigned the role of innocent to identify the 2 killers in their midst and successfully eliminate them by means of majority vote. Among the innocent roles is the Investigator, whose vote counts twice towards an elimination. Those assigned the role of killer, on the other hand, must in turn murder innocents until only one remains, and the cycle continues until the winning condition of either side is fulfilled.

After their having learned the rules, Timeline Master Awe allows the listener to exit their room, signalling the start of the game.

Day 1

14 participants wake up on the second floor of Timeline Master Awe’s mansion. Timeline Master Awe briefly appears to give the grounds layout to Stew, Rebel Cookie, Expendable Jones, Tyrone, Neptune, and Vivi Elakha, followed by Reshiram, Avery, Kairi, and Ranmaru Kageyama. The players converse and begin introducing themselves to each other.

During conversation, Reshiram sets a fireplace alight with its breath and challenges Expendable Jones to a firebreathing duel, prompting Jones to admit that he is capable of shooting fire, albeit not without drawbacks. Vivi departs for the kitchen.

Ranmaru suggests the participants take the opportunity to search the mansion, at which he, Rebel Cookie, and Expendable Jones enter the library. They find Elise Deauxnim and Amy Nara. Dookie and Silver the Hedgehog follow soon after, and the group decides to resort to playing board games to pass the time.

With the announcement of the day coming to a close, most of the players go their separate ways. The lights turn off.

Day 2

The lights turn back on. After investigation, a pile of incinerated remains is discovered in the downstairs wine cellar. Stew, who discovered the body, initially accuses Reshiram and Expendable Jones in owing to the previous day’s conversation, but Jones denies involvement, saying that his firebolts would struggle to produce a flame hot enough to burn someone to ash, whereas Reshiram’s blue fire easily could have.

Not long afterwards, Avery arrives, producing an armful of white fur. He claims to have found the evidence in the family studies and laundry room. The group notes that both Reshiram and Silver have fur of a matching colour, although Avery suspects that the fur belongs to Reshiram, judging from its whereabouts the day before.

Expendable Jones, meanwhile, retrieves a melted hairclip from the pile of ash, identifying the burned remains as Neptune’s. Jones points out a spilled bottle of alcohol on the floor nearby the entrance.

The group notices a car alarm sounding from the garage and rushes to investigate. Inside, one of the windows on the car is shattered, and a hammer is found missing from the toolrack. They speculate about the scene being an attempt to distract from the investigation, but Avery reaches into the window and extracts yellow fur from inside the car. Dookie reveals himself from hiding and claims to have been searching for evidence when the car alarm was tripped by accident. They discuss their findings with him once more and surmise that the only one between them capable of starting a fire that could have killed Neptune is Reshiram.

Vivi enters from the kitchen, however, having found a matchbook with one match removed. She claims it’s an alibi for Reshiram— there was no reason for him to use a match if he already had means of starting a fire.

Stew expresses doubt that a single match could have incinerated a body, leading to the group to theorise about the presence of an accelerant. The discussion comes back to the spilled alcohol by the cellar door. Kairi notes that ethanol, when burned, emits a smokeless blue flame.

Ranmaru proposes that they compare the two fire sources against one another in order to determine which was the cause of Neptune’s death. This prompts Avery to ask for another match to test the theory, and Rebel offers to light the alcohol, accidentally revealing that he, too, possesses fire magic, and could have burned the corpse without use of a match. In response, Vivi and Kairi reveal similar abilities; with the number of suspects only increasing, Rebel suggests that they state alibis to narrow down the field... to little avail. Jones summarises that with lack of any further progress on the alcohol, ultimately, Reshiram comes out as the most suspicious, the largest amount of evidence uncovered pointing towards him.

Reshiram accuses Avery in a panic, but the majority of the votes fall to him, with the minority going instead to Avery; Reshiram flees the mansion in lieu of response and the final verdict is a skipped vote.

Timeline Master Awe announces the absence of an execution and concludes the day’s case, beginning the night phase.

Day 3

Elise Deauxnim discovers Dookie’s corpse in the pool with a screwdriver forcibly driven through his eye. Stew, recalling that Dookie was the only one of them to vote for Avery besides Reshiram himself, infers that Avery killed the victim to silence him. Contrarily, Elise accuses Jones, who was upstairs at the time of the murder and thus would have had access to the murder weapon. The group decides to retrieve their individual toolkits from the upstairs bedrooms in order to compare their contents, but quickly discover that while all contain screwdrivers, none of the sets are identical.
